CONFERENCEThe objectives of the School are to conduct interdisciplinary fundamental and applied research in order to foster the use of applied linguistics in the context of different languages and cultures in education, research, economics, finance, politics, diplomacy, natural sciences, law and other fields.
The School also provides Latvian language and foreign language learning opportunities for students, staff and other individuals and legal entities, as well as language proficiency testing and international English language examinations.
The FH School of Languages offers PhD students the opportunity to take the PhD examination in a foreign language (English), which is required for successful completion of the PhD programme at the University.
POST-GRADUATE EXAMINATION IN FOREIGN LANGUAGE
Important dates and pre-examination consultation roster for the summer semester of 2024/2025
- The individual consultation is scheduled for the academic week of June 2 – 6, 2025. For the individual consultation, examinees are expected to be ready with the tasks listed in the pre-examination requirements that are to be submitted together with the EXAMINATION APPLICATION by May 26, 2025 to Associate Professor Vita Kalnbērziņa – vita.kalnberzina@lu.lv or Assistant Professor Laimdota Ločmele laimdota.locmele@lu.lv.
- The post-graduate examination in the English language is planned during the academic week of June 9 – 13, 2025.
Pre-examination requirements
Examinees are required:
- to prepare a review paper based on a 300-page reading (1 page – 1800 characters with spaces) of scholarly publications describing the existing level of scientific development in the studied area but not authored by the examinees themselves. The review template is available here (at least 6 pages – Times New Roman, font 12, line spacing – 1.5);
- during the second consultation, to introduce the examiner to the key takeaways from the reviewed scholarly publications and engage in the discussion of the same;
- to prepare a glossary of 50 terms excerpted from the reviewed scholarly publications. A glossary sample is available here;
- to prepare a EUROPASS CV in English;
- to submit an examination application (APPLICATION).
N.B. The submitted review paper and glossary shall bear the name of the examinee at the top and pagination at the bottom.
Examination
- Examinees read a 5,000-character-with-spaces extract of a scholarly text, write a summary of the same, and submit as well as orally present it to the Examination Board without resorting to the source text or notes and engage in a follow-up Q&A session.
- Examinees engage in the discussion on the submitted review article and their own research.
