The Department of English Studies at the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Latvia is the leading study and research institution in English Studies in Latvia. The Department boasts the highest enrolment rate among the academic departments at the Faculty of Humanities. It implements two study programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate levels: the Bachelor's degree programme in "English, European Languages and Business Studies" and the Master's degree programme in "English Studies"; moreover, its faculty members are engaged in delivering the PhD level study programme "Language and Culture Studies". The Department is committed to nurturing students' English language proficiency and equipping them with the skills and competencies demanded by the modern labour market and technological advancements. Additionally, it engages early-stage researchers - doctoral students - in ongoing research projects.
The Department pursues research centred on the use of language in context, literary studies, intercultural communication, ecolinguistics, digital humanities and translation studies.
The Department fosters a culture of active engagement in international research projects, promoting interdisciplinary collaboration and cultivating strategic partnerships with research institutions across Europe and Asia.
Additionally, the annual scientific journal “The Baltic Journal of English Language, Literature and Culture” curated by the Department is recognised and indexed in prestigious databases such as Web of Science and Scopus, showcasing the high standards of research output.
