Welcome to the academic year 2023./2024!
I am delighted to welcome our new and returning students, and our faculty and staff to the new academic year, which promises to be another exciting year.
I hope that you enjoyed the summer holidays and were able to spend time recharging and
having some quality time with your friends and family. I am sure we all have enjoyed the vast cultural opportunities offered this summer, among which the XXVII Nationwide Latvian Song and XVII Dance Festival stood out as being the culmination of Latviannes, a symbol of national unity and national identity.
The new academic year has started, and we are happy that national and international student enrolment for the new academic year has remained stable from a year ago. This testifies to the appreciation of the role of languages and cultures in enriching one’s personal life and expanding a range of academic and professional career opportunities.
The Faculty of Humanities continues to stand in solidarity with the people of Ukraine, and we are proud that we are able to support Ukrainian students, covering their tuition fees from the funds of the faculty and the university. Also, we continue sharing our premises with Riga Ukrainian school.
The beginning of a new academic year always brings fresh energy. At the University of Latvia, the year usually takes off with various events – Latvia's largest student celebration “Aristotle” held on September 3rd this year and the 104th anniversary of the University of Latvia on September 28 being the most energizing ones, but, of course, there are many more events planned this year. I encourage everyone to embrace the many opportunities the Faculty and the University provide.
