On the 2nd of August from 10:00 to 18:00, the 1st Latvian Analytic Philosophy Forum will take place at the University of Latvia, House of Sciences, Room 725. The Forum will bring together philosophers who consider themselves to be part of the analytic tradition and who use or evaluate the methods and tools of analytic philosophy.

Analytic philosophers are united by a desire for clarity, precision and soundness in their judgements, a willingness to constructively discuss and critically evaluate any philosophical position or question. The official language of the Forum will be Latvian.

The Forum will feature a presentation by Artūrs Logins (Laval University, Quebec) on normative conflict in research and belief formation. Toms Stepiņš (Faculty of History and Philosophy, University of Latvia) will speak about the challenge of experimental philosophy to the methodology of thought experiment in analytic philosophy. Reinis Vilciņš (Institute of Philosophy and Sociology, University of Latvia) will present a paper on the comparison of the use of language with chess in linguistic philosophy. Tomass Stepiņš (Institute of Philosophy and Sociology, University of Latvia) will focus on the notion of assertion and its possible equivocation in the context of the Frege-Geach problem. Emīls Zavelis (Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich) will discuss the existence of mathematical objects in the Frege-Hilbert controversy. The Forum will be concluded by Līva Rotkale (Faculty of History and Philosophy, University of Latvia) with a talk on the circularity of parts in Kit Fine’s theory of social objects.
