The University of Latvia was represented by assoc. prof. Ivars Orehovs and lecturer Cecilia Wargelius. The students from NArFU participated diligently in different ways, making presentations about the teachings of Swedish on different levels, which are offered at their local university. The students mastered the Swedish language on a very high level.
Lectures were given on following topics:
• Linguistic ecology;
• Business culture in Russia compared with Danish culture;
• Teaching in Swedish for law students;
• How to teach business communication in Swedish – a way to develop the professional competence of the students;
• Intercultural competence within the context of business Communication. The plans for publishing some of the lectures were discussed, especially contributions by Kristin Ekström and Cecilia Wargelius on the subject of business communication. Depending on new grants for future research it was decided that forthcoming seminars should focus on such subjects as linguistic ecology, development of tourism in northern Russia and the Baltic area. The seminars shall take place in Riga, Archangelsk, Minsk, Västerås and Lviv. We were very kindly received and the hospitality during our stay was overwhelming. In spite of rather cold weather we were given opportunities to see a great part of the city and its surroundings. The Scandinavian languages have better conditions in Riga than in Archangelsk. The students in Archangelsk are further away from the labour market, while students in Riga have more opportunities to use the Scandinavian languages in their work lives. However, they do not always take advantage of the possibilities offered by the labour market in Latvia.
