The third-year student of Modern Language and Business Studies BSP Olga Kijana was selected as a participant to meet the USA Ambassador, Latvia and to visit the new Embassy's premises on 6 September.

Olga Kijāna was nominated by assoc. prof. G. Roziņa and assoc. prof. I. Karapetjana as a student with excellent academic and research performance. Olga was selected as one participant out of 330 applicants. According to assoc. prof. G. Roziņa, the underlying reason to select Olga as a nominee was Olga’s deep and genuine interest in application of the English language that goes hand in hand with the key concepts of the American school of Linguistics. With huge dedication and commitment, Olga also participated in the International Summer School Project in August 2011.

May Olga herself speak about the event: "The reception celebrating 20 years of the re-established diplomatic relationship between Latvia and the USA was a wonderful opportunity allowing to witness how diplomacy works first-hand. After I had met fellow twenty-year-olds with achievements in academics and/or athletics, we were each personally greeted by the US Ambassador to Latvia, Judith Garber, which was a remarkable honour. At the beginning of the event, Ambassador Garber reminded everyone of the circumstances surrounding the announcement of the Recognition of Latvian Independence from the USSR by G. W. Bush on September 2, 1991 - in both English and Latvian. Among those speaking was also the Prime Minister Dombrovskis who emphasised the importance of continuing the relationship between Latvia and the USA in terms of politics, economy and academics. The reception also celebrated the inauguration of the new US Embassy building, which is even more impressive on the inside than outside. In addition to state-of-the-art facilities, the reception room holds historical documents depicting the course of the Latvian-USA relationship, as well as beautiful paintings and photographs. At the end of the event, the representatives were kind enough to answer our questions regarding the work of the diplomats and studying in the USA. All in all, I feel like this was an incredible and motivational experience, and I am very grateful to Dr Indra Karapetjana and Dr Gunta Roziņa for the nomination."
